Positive Discipline Enhances Lives Essay - 1593 Words

The topic of positive discipline is one of great importance especially so in the world of athletics. Often time the term discipline is misconstrued by parents, player and unfortunately some coaches. Parents may associate the term as their player being subject to harsh treatment; while athletes my see it as restrictive and punishing, sadly to say some coaches validate both the parents and the athletes view of discipline. Many older or seasoned coaches hold to the concept that discipline simply apply to the performance of all play properly, the athlete focusing solely on the sport they are participating and striving to win every game. Failure to live up to the coaches expectations could result in extreme practices or the like and be falsely†¦show more content†¦The truth is positive discipline goes well beyond simply providing instructions and enforcing punishment when those instructions are not followed to the letter. Instructing athletes on the ins and outs of their chosen s port is pointless if a coach does not train them how to implement or use the instructed task. Great coaches never assume previous coaches that their athletes may have played for, properly trained and instructed them as they should have. One thing my wife always told me when it came to our boys was â€Å"You can’t expect them to know it if you have never taught and shown them how to do it.† Coaches teach, emulate and instill; self-respect, self-discipline, courtesy, giving community involvement, pride, dignity and respect of others. In recent years as the media blows up certain sport the occurrence of athlete misconduct in those sports appears to have grown rapidly. Misconduct places a negative stigmatism on the entire organization, not just the player. More often than not negative behavior on the field of play can be traced back to behavior displayed in practice and other games. Athletes can sense when they are just a body on the field or when they are the go to perso n. Both of the fore mentioned situations, could very well leave a player feeling pitiful or privileged.
